Overview

An article in The National this week highlights that Dubai has a swell of jobs still available for the coming academic year. It is claimed that there are over 100 school jobs waiting to be filled in the city’s international schools. The figure comes as a surprise after Dubai had led expectations for being the city-of-choice for recent professional immigration out of Hong Kong, Europe, and the UK.

One cause of the current issue could be a general global shortage of teaching staff. Entry into the teaching profession has been low for several years, and only experienced an uptick in the UK in 2020 when Covid-19 forced many out of employment and onto teacher training programmes. Statistics suggest that teaching is neither attractive nor rewarding for many in the profession as it is, and the reputational damage the profession has undergone is steering potential teachers in other directions.

Another aspect of this to consider is the level of appeal for teaching overseas among millennials and Generation Z. If recent headlines are to be believed, there’s a higher degree of caution and social anxiety among the generation that is due to soon enter the teaching profession. The likelihood of these educators travelling to work in international schools may be lower than previous generations, simply because making the leap into a new country feels like a big risk to take. The number of qualified teachers in Generation Z from the UK should be down from the millennial generation also, as the rise in tuition fees in 2010 has diverted young people towards STEM and what are perceived as higher-paying professions.

History has something to teach leaders of international schools about this problem. Historians of the British Empire have highlighted that the decision to leave India can be explained by insufficient manpower to operate the Indian Civil Service following World Wars 1 and 2. History has a habit of repeating itself. The investment, good-will, and life-enhancement opportunities that international schools have promised could be at serious risk if teachers do not start to emerge in greater numbers.
