Editorial
The UK’s InTuition Magazine has this month reported that 632,000 jobs will need to be filled in the Further Education sector by 2027. With competition from other sectors challenging recruitment drives, the ETF Foundation are lobbying for a strategic approach to teacher recruitment, and seem interested in expanding their ‘Taking Teaching Further’ recruitment initiative. If successful, the initiative could support colleges in filling staff shortages and create new teacher training opportunities for experienced educators.
The report also found that around half of the FE jobs advertised in Q4 2021 were part-time, rather than full-time. The unusually high ratio of part-time jobs could be due to the nature of the sector, which is more dependent on professionals picking up an extra gig than maintained schools. Hypothetically, college leaders may also be developing a tendency to pursue low-budget solutions to staff-shortages rather than offering full-time and permanent contracts to staff.
One of the key challenges in the recruitment drive of the coming years will be the UK’s demographic shift, as the baby boomers will increasingly enter retirement. The drop-off in available labour for colleges should be quite substantial, and it may take more than one initiative to combat changes to the sector.
