Overview

Dubai continues to expand its international school sector with the opening of a new Durham School campus at Dubai Investment Park. This is in spite of recent reports that around 100 teaching jobs are still unfilled in the city at the start of the new academic year. Evidently, the consumer demand for a good education is high enough in Dubai that schools boards are still investing in the city with hope, despite enthusiasm for globalization rolling back overseas in recent years.

One trigger point in the rollback of globalisation has been the responses to Covid-19 among different governments. While some countries are still locking down, the UK and USA are increasingly regretful of the decision to do so. The evidence from education supports the idea that it was a long-term mistake, with reports this week that lockdown has caused mental health issues for Chinese students and a catastrophic drop in basic reading and math skills among US primary students.

On a more positive note, policy makers and academics in Australia are at work devising solutions to the current teacher shortage. If you are a teacher, some of the suggestions that bode well are the prospects of pay rises, reducing the number of school initiatives, and increased opportunities for overseas immigration. With the teacher shortage far from over, qualified educators have plenty of leverage in this situation.
