Editorial
The EU released statistics this week that show English remains by far the most studied additional language in its member states. 95.7% of general education students and 79.2% of vocational students were taking English classes. Following Brexit in 2016, there was speculation about the future of English in the eurozone, but loosening ties with the UK has not slowed down the momentum of the language. More likely than not, the economic strength of the USA and the education capital that the UK holds are two factors ensuring interest and investment in an Anglophonic future.
This insight is useful for members of the TESOL industry, who might feel as though they are fighting for a lost cause given the recent difficulties for gaining employment access to the EU, eastern Europe, Hong Kong, and China. These markets, perhaps along with the UAE, just 4 years ago would have been the most viable places to attempt an English or TESOL-related teaching career.
Demographic changes have the potential to challenge the role of English in education globally. French is likely to gain substantial ground in the coming decades, with several Francophonic African nations expected to have the largest population growth, provided that famine does not hinder their development. The growth of French in Africa could be highly consequential if those populations garner increased cultural and political influence over time, although the likelihood of that happening is hard to see from 2022.
Even with this development however, it will be difficult for French to compete with English as the language of legal systems in postcolonial states like India and Malaysia. Whatever movements may exist in such countries to change the legal system are not loudly heard. The relationship between English language education and the letter of the law is key to future planning in states around the world, and that could well maintain English as the global language long into the future.
