A selection of the latest education news and jobs from around the world:
Overview
Hong Kong’s teacher shortage deepens this week, as educators who were staying until the end of the academic year start to pack up their bags. Some relief for schools could come from the results of the government’s LPAT examination. A pass on the test is needed for residents to enter the teaching profession. According to the Education Bureau’s statistics, around 1295 residents this year took the test. This number will fall far short of the 4,050 teachers that are reported to have left the profession this past year however.
The word-of-mouth that I have heard from remaining expats is that the visa process in Hong Kong is taking one-third of the time it would have in past years, suggesting that there are not many teachers entering the school system from outside Hong Kong for the coming academic year. Some of the factors discouraging teachers from Hong Kong are plain to see, such as the need to quarantine for 7 days in a hotel upon entry. That being said, the city still offers excellent opportunities for educators that are able to endure the current difficulties, including annual salaries that are on average worth two years of work in the UK for equivalent work experience.
There has been a notable uptick in coverage of education-related strikes in Australia and the UK since curation of this blog began in April. The UK’s AQA exam board are working to release results on time against a three-day strike from staff. Following the teachers strike in Australia in May, the trend for anglophone education systems seems to point towards further disruption.
The EU struck a positive tone this week with Macron making a successful trip to Benin. France has pledged to support the territory’s education and security aims. In a week where most education news has been pessimistic, it is refreshing to see reports of cooperation on international education.
