Despite a series of tough years, the city of Hong Kong is still a great place for teachers to prosper. As Covid regulations and political anxiety pushes the well-heeled back to their home countries, a number of high-salary education jobs are opening up for young and adventurous teachers to take on.

Government-sponsored schools have golden-plated pay packages for those skilled enough to land them. The Civil Service Bureau’s Master Pay Scale (MPS) is used to calculate salaries.[1] For each year of school service in Hong Kong, teachers are promoted one point on the salary scale. Promotions are also given for achieving approved higher education qualifications, such as a PGCE or Masters in your specialist subject.

Hong Kong’s MPS starts at $31,750HKD per month (MPS15) for qualified educators, and rises up to $73,775HKD per month (MPS33) for those who have the necessary experience and qualifications in secondary education.

Compared to England’s teacher pay scale [2], Hong Kong pays £939 more per month at the start of the scale and £1,795 more per month for lead practitioners.

For educators who join the government’s NET scheme, there is also the opportunity to claim additional fringe benefits, including $20,989HKD for housing allowance.[3]
